Un paio di giorni fa ho avuto l’onore di intervistare, per conto di Telefilm Addicted Naomi Grossman, l’attrice famosa per il ruolo di Pepper nella seconda stagione di American Horror Story. Colgo l’occasione per ringraziarla per la sua immensa disponibilità e per la sua gentilezza. Eccovi l’intervista:

1) E’ stata dura sottoporsi a intense ore di make-up per entrare nel tuo personaggio?

Be’, vedendo come noi (i truccatori e io) abbiamo plasmato il personaggio insieme, no. Voglio dire, il make-up è soltanto un mucchio di silicone se non ha un attore che gli dia vita. Ma anche Pepper non è Pepper senza tutto quel silicone! Quindi io ero dipendente da questi, e loro da me, e non importava se fosse “dura” oppure no. Ma no, non è stata dura. In realtà siamo diventati buoni amici durante il processo. In questo modo il tempo volava.

2) Che esperienza è stata interpretare una ragazza con handicap fisici e mentali? Hai seguito una preparazione speciale prima di iniziare le riprese?

Credo che all’inizio fossi in ansia. Di solito si dice sempre che quando si recita, non si vuole mai interpretare un personaggio “completamente ritardato.” Nello specifico in uno show come AHS, che non è una comedy. Non volevo sembrare come se stessi sottovalutando la condizione. E comunque sia, la condizione è così estrema e scomoda, che quasi non riesci ad evitare di ridere. Perciò ho lavorato con un coach. Mi ha messo a mio agio, ed è stato un buon barometro per me – facendomi sapere cosa sembrava onesto e reale e mi faceva mantenere il tono dello show, e cosa sembrava semplicemente “completamente ritardato.”

3) Ti è piaciuto lavorare con Ryan Murphy? Come si approccia agli attori?

Certamente! Cosa dire – basta vedere il personaggio che mi ha affidato! Tra la vecchia Pepper e la nuova Pepper, è come se ne avessi avuto 2 in 1! E’ entusiasmante e stimolante lavorare con qualcuno così dannatamente intelligente e meticoloso. Sta gestendo mezza Hollywood però, quindi non ho avuto molto tempo per stare faccia a faccia con lui.

4) La tua scena preferita?

La canzone “The Name Game” è stata la mia preferita da girare … e guardare. E’ stata così divertente, e arrivati al decimo episodio, penso che tutti (spettatori inclusi) avessero bisogno di quel disimpegno! La scena in cui porto Arden alla sua fine infuocata, comunque sia, è stata la più emozionante e impegnativa per me come attrice. Avere quei grandi pezzi di dialogo, quando tutto ciò che avevo detto prima di allora erano grugniti monosillabici, è stato davvero magnifico. E il fatto che dovessi fare quei grandi discorsi a James Cromwell? Da brivido!

5) Pepper è stata un personaggio molto importante nella seconda stagione di American Horror Story, e la tua performance è stata magnifica. Questo ti ha aiutato ad ottenere nuovi progetti per il futuro? Ti vedremo anche in altre cose?

Certo, per me si stanno aprendo tantissime porte al momento. Sono stata invitata a convention horror per firmare autografi, e in teatri/università per fare i miei one-woman show. Mi è stato chiesto di parlare alle conferenze, e apparire in show e cortometraggi. I tempi non sono ancora maturi per dare altri particolari, ma sì, di certo potete aspettarvi di vedermi di più!

6) Qual è il tuo telefilm preferito?

“Sex and the City” è il mio preferito di tutti i tempi. Riuscivo anche ad identificarmi davvero con quei personaggi, e posso affermare con orgoglio che sono cresciuta per diventare una di loro! “Saturday Night Live” è al secondo posto – ha avuto i suoi alti e bassi, ma quello è lo show in cui ho sempre sognato di entrare a far parte, e mi è servito come ispirazione reale quando ero una giovane aspirante attrice/commediante.

7) Abbiamo visto che American Horror Story ha riconfermato alcuni degli attori della stagione precedente, e sta facendo lo stesso con la prossima, possiamo sperare di vederti nella stagione 3?

Possiamo sperare! Anche se non ho ancora ricevuto nessuna comunicazione.

8) Qual era il tuo rapporto con il resto del cast? C’è qualcuno di loro che preferisci? Qualcuno con in quale sei riuscita a creare una buona amicizia o un legame speciale?

Erano tutti molto solidali e carini. Spesso c’è una gerarchia sui set – i regular delle serie restano tra loro, le guest star non fraternizzano con le co-star, le comparse parlano solo tra di loro. Ma tra di noi non è stato così. Tutti erano gentili con tutti.

9) Cosa ti piaceva di più e cosa hai odiato di Pepper?

Non c’è stato niente che ho odiato. Credo che sarebbe stato carino tenermi i miei capelli. E con i denti era difficile parlare. E il bulbo oculare era disorientante. E se avevo un po’ di prurito sul viso, ero fregata … OK, quindi c’erano alcune cose che non mi piacevano! Ma per la maggior parte, ho adorato tutto! Credo di essermi goduta appieno il personaggio in sé per sé. Le variazioni di Pepper in particolare. Riuscire ad essere grande, giocosa e comica, poi durante lo stesso episodio, interpretarla in modo sottile e ordinario. Avere così tante differenze in un solo ruolo è un sogno per qualsiasi attore.

10) Per ciò che abbiamo visto, American Horror Story è uno show oscuro. Com’è dietro le quinte? Trovavate il tempo per gli scherzi, c’è qualche episodio che puoi condividere con noi?

Trovo sempre il tempo per gli scherzi! Direi che più di tutti, ero io il pagliaccio della classe. Mi piaceva ballare per lo staff – ma solo quando era appropriato. Sono diventata molto meno divertente quando gli alieni mi hanno riportata indietro! Per fortuna, almeno all’inizio, il mio personaggio si è prestato molto agli scherzi. Sarebbe stato molto più difficile con un ruolo diverso, più oscuro. E’ impossibile accendere il dramma dal nulla.

ENGLISH VERSION

1) Was it hard for you to spend so much time for the make up of you character?

Well, seeing as we (the makeup department and I) formed the character together, no. I mean, the makeup’s just a bunch of silicone without an actor to breathe life into it. But Pepper also isn’t Pepper without all that silicone! So I was dependent upon them, and them me, so it didn’t matter if it was “hard” or not. But no, it wasn’t hard. We actually became good friends through the process. So the time flew by.

2) What kind of experience has been to play a girl with physical and mental handicaps? Did you have a special training before shooting?

I suppose I was trepidatious at first. They always joke that when acting, you never want to play “full retard.” Particularly in a show like AHS, which is not a comedy. I didn’t want to seem like I was making light of the condition. And yet, the condition is so extreme and uncomfortable, you almost can’t help but laugh. So I worked with a coach. He set me at ease, and was a good barometer for me– let me know what felt real and honest and in keeping with the tone of the show, and what just felt “full retard.”

3) Did you like working with Ryan Murphy? How does he approach actors?

Of course! What’s not to like– just look at the character he entrusted me with! Between the old Pepper and new Pepper, it’s like I got 2 for 1! It’s thrilling and inspiring to work someone so freakishly smart and meticulous. He’s running half of Hollywood though, so I didn’t get a ton of face-time with him.

4) Do you have a favourite scene?

“The Name Game” song was my favorite to shoot… and watch. It was just so much fun, and by the tenth episode, I think we all (audience included) needed that release! The scene where I drove Arden to his fiery end, however, was the most exciting and challenging for me as an actress. To have those big chunks of dialogue, when all I’d said were monosyllabic grunts before that, was pretty awesome. And that I got to deliver those big chunks to James Cromwell? That a thrill!

5) Pepper is been a very important character in this second season of American Horror story, and you gave a terrific performance. Does this helped you to get new projects for the future? Are we going to see you somewhere else?

Sure, lots of doors are opening for me now. I’m being invited to horror conventions to sign autographs, and theaters/universities to do my one-woman shows. I’m asked to speak at conferences, and appear in shows and shorts. The ink’s not dry for me to give more specifics, but yes, you can definitely expect to see more of me!

6) What is your favourite TV show?

“Sex in the City” is my all-time favorite. I really identified with those characters, and can proudly say I’ve grown up to become one of them! “Saturday Night Live” is a close second– it’s had it’s ups and downs, but that’s the show I’ve always dreamt of being on, and has served as a real inspiration for me as a young, aspiring character/comedienne.

7) We have seen that American Horror Story brought back some actors from the previous season, and it’s going to do the same with the new one, can we hope to see you in season 3?

We can hope! Though I haven’t heard anything yet.

8) What was your relationship with the rest of the cast? Is there any member of the cast you prefer? Someone you create a good friendship or a special bonding with?

Everyone was so supportive and nice. A lot of times there’s a hierarchy on sets– the series regulars keep to themselves, the guest-stars don’t fraternize with the co-stars, the extras speak only amongst themselves. But this wasn’t like that. Everyone was cool to everyone.

9) What did you like the most and what you dislike the most of Pepper?

There was nothing I disliked. I suppose it would have been nice to keep my hair. And the teeth made it hard to speak. And the eyeball was disorienting. And if I had an itch on my face, I was screwed… OK, so there were a few things I disliked! But for the most part, I loved it all! I suppose I enjoyed the character itself the most. Pepper’s range in particular. Being able to be big and playful and comedic, then within that very same episode, play it subtle and straight. Having that much diversity packed into one role is a dream for any actor.

10) For what we saw American Horror story is a very dark show. What about the behind the scene? Did you found time for jokes, is there any story you can share with us?

I always find time for jokes! I would say of anyone, I’m the class clown. I used to like to dance for the crew– but only when it was appropriate. I was a whole lot less fun when the aliens brought me back! Fortunately, at least early on, my character lent herself well to jokes. It would have been more difficult with a different, darker role. You can’t just turn on the drama like that.
